Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug
Are you a cook at home who appreciates the nimble heat control of gas cooktops, but requires an electric oven to bake? Find a dual fuel cooker that offers the best of both worlds.
Many experienced home chefs prefer gas cooktops for their superior temperature control and capacity to use advanced cooking techniques like charring. These stoves are expensive, particularly in the event that you require an additional gas hook-up as well as an electrician to install it.
What is a 13amp outlet?
If you have dual fuel range cooker (also known as a gas and electric oven), then you'll need a suitably rated 13 amp plug. The plug must be wired by a certified electrician to the cooker ring.
This ensures that the current passing through the plug is safe and not too high, which could create an electrical fire risk. The current is controlled by a fuse inside the plug. The fuse blows whenever the current flows through it beyond its capacity, which protects the appliance from over-charge of electricity.
The fuse is classified at 13 amps, as indicated on the top of the plug and it indicates the maximum current that the plug can carry without causing harm to the appliance or overheating the socket. It is essential to ensure that when replacing fuses, you always use the same amperage as the original. You run the risk of overheating a socket when you replace a fuse that has a different rating.
A 13 amp fuse is likely to be a ceramic type, which is very durable and can withstand the high temperatures produced by the range cooker. Ceramic elements are also resistant to fire and therefore a better choice than other types.

There are several ways that a 13 amp plug can be fitted. It can be connected to an existing live socket. the flex then connected to it using either a screw or a jaw-type cord clamp. The clamp on the cord should be tightened after the plug has been firmly pushed into place.
Before connecting the wires you may need to remove the wiring diagram on cardboard which is placed over the pins of certain plugs. It is essential that the wires are cut to the proper length since cutting them too long could result in them becoming crushed when the plug cover is replaced. The earth wire should be the longest to connect it prior to the line and neutral pins.
How do I fit the 13amp plug?
The vast majority dual cookers that use fuel in the UK are wired with a 13 amp plug. This is important because ovens can draw large amounts of current, while normal plug sockets have a rating of 10 amps.
In general new appliances must be fitted with a plug at the point-of-sale. This is to ensure compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. Older appliances might not have a plug connected and this is the reason for the problem.
When connecting a cooker to an existing plug socket, the first step is to ensure that the rating of the fuse inside the fuse box is in line with the plug's rating. This is very important since a faulty sized fuse could pose a risk.
It is also recommended to check that the fuse is completely seated into the cartridge, and that there isn't any movement. The next step is to prepare the flex to be used. Take off the sheathing and reveal the three insulated conductors. Then, cut the sheathing near the entry point to the plug (beyond the cord grip) using a utility knife, but without damaging the individual conductors that are insulated. This nick should be wide enough that the sheathing can split and expand the nick as it is pulled back revealing the cable beneath. Cut off the excess sheathing leaving a little more than 40mm over the flex.
The flex is then positioned over the plug and the earth terminal is placed at the top and the neutral and live terminals at the bottom. Using duel fuel range cookers coloured conductors to guide you and the sheathing is removed from each pin and the internal cable is inserted to the appropriate terminal by using the cord grip. If the plug has a cord clamp that is screw-type, loosen it and then pull the insulation back to reveal the copper wires. Connect each wire insulated to the correct terminal by using the channel in the plug. Start with the earth conductor and then the neutral and finally, the live.
What is the maximum draw of a 13 amp plug?
The maximum current draw for 13amp plugs at 300 volts is 3kw. This is a significant amount of power but the standard fuse on the UK plug will not fail until the cable is at a risky temperature. A defective plug or socket can result in a fire, so it's vital to be vigilant about the amount of power you use particularly in the kitchen.
The ceramic fuses that are used in plugtops measure around 25mm and are suitable for mains voltage of 240V. They will feature the BS kitemark or similar mark on the side and will contain sand. There are cheaper plastic or glass alternatives but they should not be used with a live plug, or else you could blow up the fuse and possibly be electrocuted!
Most dual fuel range cookers sold in the UK need to be hard-wired and are not able to plug directly into a wall socket. They are usually connected to a separate cooker ring circuit which is only suitable for appliances that draw up to 20 amps.
You can verify the ring circuit at your home by looking at the fuse box or by asking an electrician nearby. They will be able tell you whether the sockets in your home are connected to the same ring or are separate and whether there is a separate circuit for your oven.

What is the maximum current draw of the cooker switch?
There is plenty of confusion over what the maximum current draw of a cooker switch actually is. The majority of cookers are hard-wired and connected to a specific oven-ring circuit and not an ordinary socket. This is due to the fact that they usually consume more than 20 amps when the gas hob and electric oven are in use.
So, you won't find a dual range cooker with a fuel source that can be fitted to a standard socket as this would present a very serious fire risk and would be against electrical safety regulations. A licensed electrician will install any new electrics to a cooker in the kitchen, and they will ensure that the total load (both the oven and the hob) will not exceed the supply capability of that circuit.
The benefits of a dual fuel range cooker are the responsive heat of a gas cooktop with the precision of an electric oven. This is why they are popular among chefs and cooks at home alike. Dual cookers that use fuel are great to experiment with different cooking techniques, such as searing or grilling.
When you are looking to purchase a new range cooker, you'll need to take into consideration several factors like size, function and price. In addition, you will be required to ensure that your home has an appropriate gas hook-up to the appliance. If you're not sure, it is best to book a Gas Safe engineer to inspect your home prior to installing.
Currys' dual fuel range cookers are available in a range of models that will fit all budgets. From budget-friendly models from Indesit and Zanussi to our own Essentials collection. If you're seeking something more sophisticated we have a selection of premium JennAir models that feature several new features.
It is crucial to read the instruction manual for the owner before purchasing a dual fuel range cooker. This will provide specific details regarding the electrical and gas requirements. You must make sure that your home has a gas hook-up that is suitable, and you may need to get a plumber to install it for you if it is required. Depending on the home you'll also have to make sure that you have a cooker ring circuit in place and approved by a licensed electrician.
